Position Summary

North Carolina Department of Agriculture of Consumer Services (NCDA) seeks an intern who has an interest in issues facing limited resource/minority/ and socially disadvantaged farmers.  We seek an energetic self-starter with excellent communication and research skills. The individual must be able to take direction well and work independently. The Intern will provide program support to NCDA 's Small Farms Division. 

Job Duties

Conservation outreach:

• Assists in performing initial site assessments for landowners and farmers to discuss conservation planning.

• Assists in maintaining positive and working relationships with farmers and landowners by providing accurate and up to date information on conservation and forestry plans and programs.

• Work with local USDA Natural Resource Conservation office to learn about conservation planning and programs

Communication & Development:

• Works with the Small Farms staff to create landowner educational materials, meetings, and workshops.

• Works with the Website Manager to maintain Small Farms Division Webpage.

• Assists in planning and conducting outreach and engagement events.


Qualifications: Required

• Self-motivated  hard worker

• Ability to relay technical information in a jargon relevant to farmers and other non- professionals

• Ability to organize information into useful, easy-to-understand  formats

• Familiarity/ interest in issues facing small farmers

• Ability to communicate with a variety of skill levels

• Personal commitment and dependable work schedule

Qualifications: Preferred

• Willingness to work cooperatively with a wide range of people and organizations

• Ability to travel

• Excellent organizational and multi-tasking ability

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Special Requirements:

This position requires transportation and some weekend hours.
