Internship Position Title

Community Engagement Coordinator for Walnut Hill

Host site

Triangle Land Conservancy 


Walnut Hill Nature Preserve (the organization’s home base is in Durham but we anticipate having a satellite office open at the preserve by summer 2019)


Internships are 10 weeks full-time

Position Summary

The Community Engagement Associate reports to the Senior Conservation Manager and is responsible for developing and implementing programs and activities designed to increase, engage and retain members and enhance opportunities for public engagement with TLC’s Walnut Hill Preserve. Walnut Hill Preserve is not yet open to the public but TLC is working on converting this 406 acre farm into a local food hub and nature preserve. The preserve will be comprised of walking and biking trails, habitat restoration, and agricultural areas with an anticipated public opening of 2020. The Community Engagement Coordinator will work with partners to introduce them to the property, host events to build excitement around the preserve, and recruit and manage volunteers. These are essential first steps towards opening a successful preserve in 2020. 

Job Duties

Event Planning and Management - 40%

  • Plans, develops and implements ongoing and innovative events, outings, and other activities both on and off preserve to introduce the community to Walnut Hill and keep them engaged.
  • Schedules and handles registration for events and outings for TLC and publicizes events.
  • Create social media and website content relevant to events and outings.
  • Establishes and maintains a high level of customer service for members, partners, and the community including handling concerns and issues.

Volunteer Outreach and Management – 30%

  • Following Service Enterprise guidelines, coordinate volunteer opportunities for members, potential donors, and corporate and community groups for a variety of TLC events, programs, and projects.
  • Utilize VolunteerHub to unify volunteer records, communicate with volunteers, organize events, and record and publicize hours.
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers for conservation workdays, citizen science, and event hosting.
  • Manages TLC tables at events, leads outings and hikes as needed and oversees training and coordination for volunteers.
  • Maintain and keep track of volunteer paperwork using VolunteerHub and The Raisers Edge NXT.

Partnerships – 30%

  • Maintains communications with existing partners and explores growth opportunities.
  • Document new and existing partnerships and contacts with The Raiser’s Edge NXT.
  • Initiate, develop and coordinate community partnerships that raise TLC’s profile in the Triangle community.
  • Actively apply Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lens to all our work and partnerships and work to help TLC become more equitable. 


Required knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Must have a proven ability to work independently, problem solve, and stay organized.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Social Media required. Word Press and database experience preferred.

Preferred knowledge, skills and experience: Demonstrated experience working in community outreach, event planning/implementation, volunteer coordination, preferably in a not-for-profit setting.  

Unique considerations that this position demands: This position will require some work out of normal business hours leading volunteer groups and partners who want to have events on weekends or after hours. The intern will need to be comfortable with indoor and outdoor work activities during the summer months in a rural setting that include site tours, organizing volunteer ecological projects, as well as planned engagements for program activities and project events.
