Position Summary

The Gullah Geechee Corridor Project Coordinator will oversee community outreach and some project organization of the Coastal Land Trust’s Reaves Chapel project and other projects within the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. The Coastal Land Trust has formed partnerships in the Town of Navassa to save Reaves Chapel, a local landmark of Gullah Geechee heritage. The Coordinator will continue to expand community outreach to increase community investment and support of Corridor projects over the summer. The Coordinator will focus on moving projects forward by increasing presence in the local community and deepening connections with our partners. This position will provide experience in project management, community relations, creating and overseeing volunteer opportunities for these projects, and possibly historic restoration of Reaves Chapel. This position also includes a research component to identify some of the most significant cultural history to be included in Reaves Chapel project, as well as the potential Gullah Geechee cultural heritage center proposed in Navassa. The Coordinator will also assist Coastal Land Trust staff in other activities related to land stewardship, conservation outreach, and special events on a case-by-case basis.

This position is an integral part of the Coastal Land Trust’s Community Conservation focus.

Job Duties

Project Management 20%

  • Organize and assist with oversight of tasks associated with the acquisition and restoration of Reaves Chapel
  • Organize and assist with oversight of progress with other projects within the Memorandum of Understanding with the Town of Navassa and other partner groups such as Cedar Hill/West Bank Heritage Foundation.

Community Engagement 50>#/span###

  • Create and Implement One Community Engagement Event at Reaves Chapel
  • Attend Community and partner meetings
  • Increase consistent correspondence with partners
  • Engage social media- Reaves Chapel Facebook page and #ReavesChapel on Instagram

General Land Trust Activities 15%

  • Participate in operational meetings
  • Attend land trust events
  • Provide support to land trust staff

Research 15%

  • Research Gullah Geechee history aspects specific to Reaves Chapel and Kerr McGee sites



  • A minimum of two years of college or university work toward a degree in communications, natural resources, land planning, public relations, humanities or related field.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Public speaking ability, excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and applicable extensions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; dependable and flexible personality.
  • Ability to work independently, in a team setting, with partners, and with the public.
  • Familiarity with the State of North Carolina, its government, culture, people, and natural resources.
  • Hours may include travel and overnight, and may occasionally fall outside of the standard workweek.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • A sense of humor is a must.
