Position Summary

Youth Ambassadors for a Better Community Project trains youth on leadership and communication skills, educates them on environmental justice, conservation, local food access, policy and nutrition education (both at home and regionally) and pairs youth and mentors to grow, harvest and market locally grown produce. 

The Youth Ambassadors attend workshops to train them on aspects of creating their own businesses and learn skills in marketing, developing business plans as well as participating in the Junior Master Gardeners Program. The Youth Ambassadors assist the community gardener mentors with finding places to sell their produce, including area farmers markets, produce stands, restaurants, events, churches and non-profits. In addition, the Youth Ambassadors learn about environmental justice and stewardship ethics. We partner with NC A&T, NC Cooperative Extension, Gathering for Good, Resourceful Communities, local governments, Boys and Girls clubs and schools. 

Job Duties

The project leader (intern) for Youth Ambassadors for a Better Community will:

• Lead and support the Youth Ambassadors for a Better Community program, an environmental and agricultural leadership program.   (Environmental Education and Agricultural/Community Garden 25%)

• Coordinate Youth Ambassadors leadership trainings, garden and agricultural education and work.  (Agricultural/Community Garden 25%)

• Identify key learning opportunities including sustainable agriculture, climate change, and environmental justice. (Environmental Education and Agricultural/Community Garden 25%)

• Identify career exploration opportunities with natural resource based professional agencies and non-profits. (Environmental Education 25%)

Special Requirements: 

Some travel might be required, including some possible weekends or evenings. (Flex time will be used, as appropriate and consistent with federal regulations in place at the time of the internship.)  

A personal vehicle will be required for shorter trips – less than 100 miles round trip – and interns will be reimbursed mileage at the current IRS reimbursement rate ($0.54 per mile).  For trips longer than 100 miles roundtrip, Men and Women United will cover the cost of a rental car and gas.  Incidentals, such as meals and lodging (if needed), will also be reimbursed.
