Position Summary

The CTNC intern will be active in the day-to-day workings of and serve as a leader for Asheville GreenWorks’ Youth Environmental Leadership Program (YELP).  YELP is a dynamic, educational, work-based paid internship for youth of color (ages 15 to 19) from primarily low wealth backgrounds.  The assistant may transport interns to offsite work locations or educational opportunities and work as the site leader for the day.  As a site leader, the intern will deliver ice breakers and team building activities as a way to keep the group’s focus and build comradery.  Also, the intern will serve as a role model for youth, some of whom this may be their first job.  The CTNC intern will assist with organizing an intern camping trip and an end of summer ceremony for GreenWorks staff, board, and community partners showcasing YELP’s summer accomplishments.

The CTNC intern will perform environmental field work led by experts from partnering organizations, including the National Park Service and multiple non-governmental agencies.  At least twenty days will be spent in the field completing physical work projects while leading and learning.  These projects may include river cleanups, removal of invasive vegetation, citizen science data collection, and pollinator habitat restoration.  The intern will also lead the YELP interns in roving recycling education at public housing areas and communicating waste reduction practices with residents, informally and through print educational materials. 

The purpose of the position is to assist the Director of Education with an educational work-based paid internship for youth that helps Asheville GreenWorks work towards its commitment in creating a more inclusive environmental movement through education and opportunity.

Job Duties

Program Assistant – 70%

  • Work as a leader for a paid youth internship program  

Event Coordination – 15%

  • Help organize intern camping program

Event Coordination – 15%

  • Help plan and organize an End of Summer celebration for staff, board members, and community partners


Required knowledge, skills and experience:

The position requires a willingness to get dirty, serve as a leader, learning and working alongside youth on outdoor project related tasks sometimes in hot weather and in remote areas as well as in an urban area.  The intern will need to be reliable, self-motivated, and work with partnering agencies in order to get the day’s job accomplished.  Training will be provided for experiencing nature in the outdoors.

A valid NC driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.

Unique considerations that this position demands:

Position does include some weekend and evening work and limited use of the applicant’s private vehicle in the local area.  A quarter to half of the work days will be in the field, lifting up to 20 lbs, hiking up to two miles and canoeing in the French Broad River.
