Farm to School to Healthcare Garden Steward Supervisor

Position Summary

The Farm to School to Healthcare (F2S2H) Garden Steward Supervisor will work alongside a diverse group of community partners to strengthen and expand school gardens, youth-led farmer’s markets, and other community outreach associated with the project. The internship will focus on developing best practices and programs that support the work of F2S2H including: sustainable gardening practices, youth leadership, and summer camps targeting youth around gardening, environmental stewardship, and Healthy Eating and Active Living (HE/AL).  This opportunity provides a unique experience to learn how a group of community partners work together to address social determinants of health in a rural community with limited financial resources. The intern will be housed at Hertford County Cooperative Extension so they will also gain insights into how nontraditional partners can engage in conservation work and environmental education in a community setting. Partners are committed to ensuring the health and safety of all participants, therefore this placement may convert to an entirely virtual experience pending the progress of the pandemic.

Job Duties

Lead Garden Stewards (High School Volunteers) through Leadership and Garden Activities (70%):

  • Model standards of behavior for Garden Stewards
  • Educate students on gardening practices and safety protocols
  • Lead gardening activities in the various sites managed by F2S2H
  • Ensure safe and welcoming work environment for Garden Stewards
  • Develop work schedules and site rotations for Garden Stewards
  • Communicate needs of Garden Stewards to community partners and supervisor
  • Assist Garden Stewards in their efforts to lead a pop-up farmer’s market
  • Coordinate professional development opportunities during weekly team meetings

Educational Program Development and Implementation (20%):

  • Assist with the development of educational programs for summer camp participants
  • Assist with the implementation and evaluation of programs
  • Communicate effectively with diverse populations including young children and their parents/caregivers

Develop Best Practices for Sustainable Gardening (5%):

  • Review and evaluate existing strategies for maintaining school gardens
  • Evaluate literature for recommendations on improving sustainable gardening practices
  • Train program participants on implementation of best practices

Assist with Expansion and Forward Momentum of Farm to School to Healthcare (5%):

  • Assist with partner meetings to discuss progress of F2S2H
  • Collect necessary data for grant reports associated with gardens, produce, and community engagement
  • Assist with grant writing if relevant during term of service

The successful candidate must be comfortable working in outdoor settings, including high temperatures throughout the summer and performing basic gardening tasks such as digging in the soil, handling insects and plants, and harvesting and cleaning produce. Precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of the intern and Garden Stewards, including scheduling outdoor work times early in the day, rescheduling work days in extreme heat or other adverse weather conditions, and following sun safety protocols. 

This internship position will primarily function during regular working hours including 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday- Friday. Some evening or weekend programs may occur, but should be kept to a minimum. Interns will need to have reliable transportation in order to serve at various garden sites throughout the community.

About the Max Internship

Founded in 2008 in honor of late board member, Max Mukelabai, the Max internship provides a platform for high school graduates and college students of color – including people of Asian, Black, Latinx, multiracial, and Native American descent – to engage in and help shape conservation work. Rising leaders of color from across the state participate in paid 10-week summer internships, gaining real-world, hands-on experience. CTNC provides compensation, one-on-one mentorship, and professional networking to equip interns with a strong foundation for successful careers in conservation and beyond.

During the program, host sites learn about conservation through a lens of race and power. Through a combination of individual and group learning, host site supervisors build their capacity to facilitate discussions about race within their organizations, understand their relationships to power, and develop strategies for transforming a culture based in race equity practice.


All interns will receive a $5,000 stipend, divided and paid bi-monthly over the course of their internship.
